ASSESSMENT OF FITNESS TO DRIVE A MOTOR VEHICLE (SAAQ)
An occupational therapy service to promote your independence on the road
WHAT IS IT?
The assessment is professional, respectful, and tailored to your pace. It aims to ensure that you can drive safely, for yourself and others.
The general duration:
- Clinical evaluation: 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours
- Test drive: about 1 hour
Step 1: Assessment of prerequisites for driving
This initial step aims to assess the cognitive, physical, and perceptual skills necessary for safe and autonomous driving.
The occupational therapist checks, among other things:
- the attention
- the memory
- the coordination
- the reaction speed
- visual perception
Step 2: Test Drive
This second step involves a road test to assess the person's actual ability to drive a vehicle safely in a controlled environment.
Recommendations
Following the two assessments, the occupational therapist:
- conveys its recommendations to the client
- send a report to the SAAQ
It is then the SAAQ that makes the final decision regarding the maintenance or issuance of the driver's license.
