What does gonalgia eat in the winter?
Frequent but poorly understood pain, knee pain can result from several mechanical factors. Osteopathy, through a comprehensive evaluation of the body, can identify its origin and provide lasting relief.
Did you know that in Quebec, over 10% of osteopathy consultations are related to lower limb pain, especially knee pain? Whether you live in LaSalle, Charlemagne, or the surrounding areas, find out how osteopathy can help you regain mobility and comfort.

What is gonalgia?
Gonalgia is the medical term for knee pain. The knee is the joint between the femur and the tibia, including the patella (kneecap). Between these bones, there are also two menisci and several ligaments.
Some common causes of knee pain:
- Injuries: Sports injury, fall, impact, or accident can affect several structures of the knee.
- Ligaments: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear, posterior cruciate ligament (PCL), medial collateral ligament (MCL), lateral collateral ligament (LCL).
- Meniscus: The menisci, cartilage discs, can suffer tears during twisting motions with weight bearing.
- Bones: Fractures of the tibial plateau, femoral condyles, or patella; possible dislocations between the tibia, femur, and patella.
- Knee Osteoarthritis (Gonarthrosis): 14% of adults in Canada suffer from osteoarthritis, the majority in the knees (Young et al., 2023). Common symptoms: inflammation, pain, bone friction due to cartilage wear, osteophytes (bone spurs), geodes (bone holes). Total knee replacement surgery may sometimes be necessary.
Osteopaths do not cure osteoarthritis but help to reduce pain and inflammation. After surgery, osteopathy promotes rehabilitation by improving the flexibility of scars, blood and lymphatic circulation, and the overall biomechanics of the body for better adaptation.
- Rheumatism and rheumatoid arthritis: An autoimmune inflammatory disease attacking tissues and joints. Osteopathy improves joint mobility, blood and lymphatic circulation to reduce pain and inflammation (Cao, 2011).
- Patellofemoral syndrome: Pain caused by the friction of the patella on the femur, which can progress to chondromalacia and osteoarthritis without treatment.
- Muscle and tendon pain:
- Goosefoot: Internal pain exacerbated by overload, involving semitendinosus, gracilis, and sartorius.
- Iliotibial band syndrome: Common outer pain among runners, basketball players, and cyclists.
